Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Gardens

Consisting of 110 acres of cultivated and natural habitat, the site showcases numerous flora species which are found throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and their various stages of growth and development. The site consists of a Heritage Garden, which consists of divisions, cuttings or seeds from original plants which were documented to have been imported to the province from various geographic locations over the last 40 years; the Medicinal Garden which showcases a selection of medicinal herbs, shrubs and trees that were used in temperate parts of the Old World (Europe and Asia) and became well known in the province; the Alpine House which consists of plants native to various international alpine regions and extensive rock gardens. The site also consists of numerous bogs where natural flora and fauna may be viewed and extensive trails within the boreal forest. An Ethnobotanical Trail is currently being developed which will showcase and interpret the province’s native plants, complete with information on how they were utilized by the provinces various First Nation peoples. The site is the only Botanical Garden east of Montreal. Location: 306 Mt.
