Hawthorne Cottage offers a glimpse of the life and home of world-renowned Arctic explorer, Captain Bob Bartlett. Considered to be one of Canada's foremost arctic explorers, Bartlett headed more than twenty voyages to the Canadian arctic, including the 1908 voyage to Ellesmere Island with Robert E. Peary. Built in 1830, the cottage is a rare example of the 'picturesque' or 'cottage orne' architectural style. Located in the heart of Brigus, Hawthorne Cottage was once the centre of activity in Brigus and typifies the refined lifestyle of Newfoundland outport merchant families in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The collection includes furniture and furnishings of the late 1800's and early 1900's and archival items such as correspondence, photos, and postcards. The site also has a remarkable collection of domestic textiles. Hawthorne Cottage is operated by the non-profit Historic Sites Association. All revenue earned though admission fees and gift shop sales is directly invested in preserving and presenting Hawthorne Cottage. Guided tours, heritage gardens and live theatre await..
