Anglican Cathedral Museum & Archives
One of the finest examples in North America of the Gothic Revival style of architecture, the Cathedral was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1846. The Cathedral Archives contains material relating to the Anglican Church in Newfoundland dating back to the mid 1700's, including architectural drawings, blueprints and maps that document changes in the Cathedral and its environs over the years. The Archives also maintains a small collection of artifacts which relate to the Great Fire of 1892 (which caused extensive damage to the building), Church missions and the history of the Anglican Church in Newfoundland and the world.
Since 1699, at least five churches, both wooden and stone, were erected on or near the site of the present Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The building that has become a St. John's landmark was started in 1843 by The Right Reverend Aubrey George Spencer and continued by the energetic Bishop Edward W. Feild, who made an outstanding contribution to Newfoundland society during his episcopate. Construction of the Cathedral continued through the nineteenth century, despite the tremendous misfortune of fires in 1846 and 1892, and on into the twentieth century.
The 1892 fire destroyed most of the structure. As a result, resources for a planned spire were used for reconstruction of the main building and the spire was never completed. The building is an excellent example of gothic architecture and is a National Historic Site. Few headstones remain in the churchyard which was used as the only approved burial ground in the city for all faiths until ca. 1850.
